Origins
500 Voices was created out of the desire to see appropriate Indigenous images being used for major public art and architectural projects. Our aim is to demystify the process of cultural engagement and create contemporary artworks that have natural authenticity.
The director and principal artist is Dr Shane Smithers. Shane traces his Aboriginal heritage to the Dharug, Dharawal and Gandangara peoples, however as he was conceived, born and lives on Dharug country, he is referred to as a Dharug man. He is currently completing his second PhD in Contemporary urban Indigenous art and traditional symbols. Shane is an award-winning artist, and has many years experience as a heritage carpenter and project manager, so understands the construction industry and has the requesite 3D imaginative vision. He is supported by a highly skilled consulting team with academic qualifications in art, archaeology, and social history. We also cover curatorial projects and consult with colleagues from different tribal groups from around Australia. For our projects we have a rigorous consulting process to ensure all stakeholders have a voice.
Shane Smithers is represented by Cooee Art Gallery, Sydney and Day Fine Art, Blackheath.
